Saturday 25th of April will be remembered as the day the when the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir hosted the first ever appearance in Spain of the famous Chivenor Branch of the Military Wives Choir, made famous by Gareth Malone on the BBC to the delight of capacity audiences that packed into the venue. The concerts were held at the Ecumenical Centre La Zenia where both choirs absolutely demonstrated their talents and abilities to thoroughly receptive and enthusiastic audiences.
The ladies were greeted with ecstatic applause when they entered, and every number they sang was also rapturously received. The Military Wives choir sang a wide programme featuring well loved songs from both world wars, music they had sung during the making of the television series, plus modern tunes form well known artists. They also spoke openly about the importance and the meaning of the 80 Military Wives Choirs that have been set up as a result of their success. The audiences were totally enchanted by the ladies and loved every minute of their performance.
The singing of the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir was well summarised by the Military Wives who stated that they were absolutely blown away by the outstanding quality of sound that the men produced. The ladies had no idea what to expect from their hosts but they were overwhelmed by the virtuosity, the professionalism and the wide range of music sang by the men.
The concerts concluded with two numbers sung by both choirs that brought the house down. The combined sound of the joint choirs sent shivers down the spine and brought the packed audience to their feet in a well deserved Standing Ovation that lasted for many minutes.
The Chivenor Ladies were stunned by the warmth and love shown by the audiences and they stated that they can’t wait to return again to sing with the Orihuela Male Voice Choir. Their one regret is that the visit has been so short.
The concerts raised over 4000€ for charity.
