Promoting Green Routes

On Sunday the 10th of May, the seventeenth annual Día Nacional de Las Vías Verdes celebrates alternative green routes for cyclists and pedestrians through some idyllic scenery.

Many of the routes follow the paths of disused railway lines, such is the case of one in Torrevieja which runs adjacent to the salt lakes, free of cars and offering a more leisurely route than roadways.

This year, the slogan is “Vive la Vía: ¡muévete!” With a variety of activities arranged on many of these routes throughout the country, with races, information strolls, mountain bike routes and more, all celebrating the environmental beauty that surrounds these once industrial arteries.

As well as centring on the day of the 10th, events take place right through the month of May, with the aim of promoting the green routes and their environmental and health benefits, whilst encouraging positive habits and activities for the whole family.

A website is available that provides more details about the activities being promoted, which van be visited at www.viasverdes.com, where there are also links to social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the annual Dekabike event takes place in Decathlon stores around the country. On the Orihuela Costa, the event starts at the Zenia Boulevard store at 10:30, where there will also be entertainment and games for all the family.

The cycle route will then cover 6.5 kilometres of the Orihuela Costa, all at a leisurely pace, enabling those who take part to enjoy a restful ride through the scenery of the coast.

Everybody is welcome to take part, but you must register in advance at the Decathlon store before Saturday.

Cycle helmets are mandatory for those taking part, and more details are available at the store.
