RBL – TORREVIEJA, F.A.C.E and PINK LADIES
The RBL at The Saint George’s Day Event
The Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion were at The Emerald Isle on Thursday 23 April to celebrate Saint George’s Day.
The day started with a parade by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums leading the way. This was followed by standards of the Branch, the Royal Naval Association, the Royal Marines Association and the Royal Air Force Association. The highlight of the parade was heralded by the Chelsea Pensioners from London who came over especially for the event. All association members then marched to the Emerald Isle.
Eddie Coleman the Branch Vice Chairman and organiser of the day welcomed everyone and invited The Counsellor for the coast Martina Scheurer to officially open the event.
There were many stalls which were kept very busy throughout the day along with many acts. The afternoon the was hosted by Simon Morton.
Finally the raffle was drawn and the day raised 850.00€. Thank you for everyone who supported the day.

PTSD in the military
This infographic points out that many of the serving or veteran military personnel who are diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are simply not receiving the clinical or financial support they need.
This is despite the fact that PTSD is more understood than ever before. In fact, as the infographic points out, doctors have been treating soldiers for psychological effects of combat since World War I.
The infographic focuses on facts about how PTSD affects servicemen and women.
Some of the highlights of this infographic include:
- 65,000 WWI veterans were still being treated for ‘shell shock’ 10 years later
- PTSD in the US affects 31% of veterans
- 1 in 3 people develop PTSD after a traumatic experience
- Under 18s are significantly more likely to suffer PTSD when leaving the forces
- 93% of veterans are ashamed or embarrassed about their mental health problems
- 62% of PTSD sufferers also have current or past alcohol or drug problems
- 3/4 of veterans on average resolve symptoms with counselling
Ladies of F.A.C.E St Georges Quiz
The ladies of F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) organised a fabulous quiz night using St George as the theme.
The quiz was held at the Bar Kubatin underneath the Hostel Meson in Arboleas.
The quizmaster, David Cundy, devised 50 questions almost all of which related to St George, and included questions on sport, geography, general knowledge and literature.
Eighteen teams of between four and six persons entered the event. The winners of the Wooden Spoon was a team representing Albox Insurance led by Glen and Jayne Urwin. The winning team was called Partaloa Players and they won 50€.
In addition to the quiz there was also a raffle for prizes that had been donated by some of F.A.C.E.’s supporters and sponsors. The charity would like to thank all their sponsors on the night. They were Smooth FM Radio, Angels Nursing Group, Sol Yoga Centre and Avalon Europe who all sponsored one of the quiz rounds. Raffle prizes were donated by Anne Morton, Zoe West, Lorraine Cundy and Albox Insurance.
The main aim was of course to raise money for the various charities which F.A.C.E. supports on an ongoing basis. In this they were very successful raising just over 500€.

Pink Ladies on St Georges Day
Morgan’s Bar at Eagles Nest hosted a St George’s Day fundraiser with The Pink Ladies on behalf of the AECC.
Thanks to owners Jane & Billy, all the entertainers, – including Ricky Neil, Suzi G & Dan Davis, who gave their time freely, and the Just Brass band, who generously donated 150€.
Total sum raised from Raffle & Donations 777€. The celebrations ran from 2.00pm until late. Well done and thanks to all for a great day.
