Weather warnings issued across Spain as temperatures soar

36 provinces across Spain are currently on alert for high temperatures and there will be no reprieve until the weekend.

Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, on Tuesday put 36 provinces on alert for high temperatures, as the first heatwave of the summer hits the country.

Some 18 provinces were given “high alert” status which means there is a significant risk of high temperatures.

Areas on high alert include Madrid, where temperatures are forecast to top 40C on Tuesday and Córdoba, where the mercury rose to 43C.

The Red Cross in Madrid issued guidelines to help people get through the heatwave, which should be followed especially closely by the most vulnerable: children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.

Tips include:

  • Keep hydrated throughout the day.
  • Wear light clothing.
  • Avoid heavy exercise.
  • Eat light meals full of fruit and vegetables.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
