EL EJIDO celebrated the 40th anniversary of its theatre by launching an extensive arts programme running from 19 May to June 10th.
Kickstarting the series was a parade featuring volunteers, local actors and members of over 45 social groups to mark the milestone in the city’s cultural life.
The opening ceremony featured musical performances and the ‘Fiesta Holi de los Colores’ where 80 kilos of gluten-free powdered sugar was distributed amongst gatherers at the Plaza Mayor. There was also a performance by a local orchestra, choirs and notably a video mapping show projected onto El Ejido City Hall.
84 shows, including musical performances, dance, acrobatics, theatre and live music shows are scheduled across 27 different locations including in Adra, Huércal-Overa, Vera, Vícar and Almería over the next three weeks.
The programme comes after months of local planning geared at family-friendly activities as well as innovative theatre throughout the municipality for the public.
Julia Ibáñez, El Ejido Councillor for Culture, explained that “To celebrate this date, we have made a great effort of management, organization and production with the objective of setting up a wide and varied program endorsed by quality and prestige.”
Local officials are hoping the anniversary serves as a launching pad opportunity to bring El Ejido, and the wider area, greater national and international recognition for its cultural heritage and artistic innovation.
