ZURGENA COUNCIL are worried about earthquakes.
In order to tackle these fears, the town hall has teamed up with the Spanish Legion to organise a special emergency drill on Wednesday May 24.
Working alongside emergency services, civil protection and local police, the authorities will simulate an emergency situation so that residents know what to do in the event of an earthquake, flood, or other natural disaster.
Organisers are determined that the exercise be as realistic as possible, so they are currently seeking volunteers of all nationalities to participate.
During the activity, military vehicles will pick up groups of ‘injured’ volunteers and transport them to a ‘secure zone’ at the municipal swimming pool, where they will be treated and fed.
Soldiers from the Alfonso XIII brigade of the Almerian Legion will be driving and coordinating the rescue.
Security Councillor Jim Simpson said: “We need to draw up a list of all volunteers including their names, phone numbers, addresses and NIE or DNI.
“It would be ideal to get volunteers from different parts of the village and of different ages, as well as with physical difficulties or mobility problems, since this would help us to test the skills of our services to handle such factors.”
Town mayor Luis Diaz thanked the Legion for “accepting our request” to demonstrate the “commendable work that they always perform in situations of this type,” adding that “at the same time this will allow us to improve the reaction of our town.”
