* 1905 Golfer James Braid carded a four-round 318 in the British Open at St Andrew’s.
* 1908 England placed their first internationals in June, beating Austria 6-1 and 11-1 in successive games in Vienna.
* 1930 Max Schmelling beat Jack Sharkey on a foul to win the World heavyweight title.
* 1948 Babe Ruth appeared in his final baseball game in the Yankee Stadium.
* 1950 West Indian spinners Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine made their Test debuts against England; Valentine took 8-104 in the first innings.
* 1955 Car crashed into crowd and killed 83 spectators during the Le Mans 24-hour race.
* 1956 Future tennis star Bjorn Borg was born in Stockholm, Sweden.
* 1964 American Jack Nicklaus won the British Open golf title.
