Art and solidarity in Mojacar

INVITATION: Passers-by helped create the ‘people’s painting’

THE seafront promenade in Mojacar was once again transformed into an open-air art gallery last weekend as the Paseo del Arte initiative returned with a show of more than 150 works by numerous artists.

The first Paseo del Arte event was staged back in the spring with the help of local artists, residents and regular visitors to Mojacar who, with the collaboration of the local council, decided to keep up the artistic tradition established by so many great artists who have over the years chosen the village as a reference point for their work.

Not only does the event serve as a fantastic exhibition, allowing passers-by to admire and purchase the artists’ work, it also brings art and solidarity together, with 20 per cent of the proceeds going to good causes.

This edition of Paseo del Arte included a tribute to Elaine Brown, the founder of the local MACS association, which helps cancer sufferers and their families with all kinds of support. Elaine also suffered with this terrible disease and sadly passed away recently despite her long and brave fight, setting an example for everyone with her commitment and generosity.

All the artists involved agreed that the money raised in this relaunch of the event will be used for a bench with a plaque of honour in her name, which will be placed in the exhibition area of the promenade.

Featuring again in this autumn edition of Paseo del Arte was the ‘people’s painting’. Anyone who fancied a dab with a paintbrush was invited to add a touch of their handiwork to a painting set up by the organizers until it was completed. The final work will be auctioned on Facebook, with the proceeds going to charity.
