Kayak coastal clean-up

RUBBISH: Volunteers removed 11 bags of litter from a beach inaccessible by land.

COASTAL Cleaners Andalucia did a kayaking clean-up last week.

Setting out from Playa de las Conchas on the road between Villaricos and El Calon, seven Coastal Cleaners Andalucia volunteers kayaked almost to El Calon, enjoying the beautiful rocky coastline and crystal clear water along the way. On their return trip they stopped at a beach inaccessible by land and cleaned it up, removing 11 bags of litter, mostly plastic. This brought the total amount of rubbish removed from local beaches to a massive 684 bags in just eight months.

The hardy volunteers then snorkelled in the chilly but incredibly clear water and strapped the bags to the kayaks for the homeward trip.

Sadly there was a lot of irrigation piping wrapped up in the rocks and seaweed on the beach and they were not able to remove it all. They cut some sections off and took what they could carry. This kind of agricultural fly tipping was highlighted just a few weeks ago by the BBC in a documentary about the Mediterranean.

Coastal Cleaners Almeria hope to be back at the Lunar Cable park in late November to try out the new wake board facility and in December they have a litter pick followed by a pre-Christmas lunch. No doubt there will be other clean up days too.
