Latvia to create Internal Security Academy with first student intake in 2023

Latvia is to create its own Internal Security Academy with an initial investment of €45 million.

According to news site BNN news on Tuesday, October 25, the first student intake will be in September 2023.

The Minister of the Interior Kristaps Eklons said that an agreement had been reached with the State Police College, Riga Stradins University and University of Latvia to create the academy.

Eklons continued saying that the next year will be spent developing the programme which will be funded by central government.

New facilities are set to be built on the site where the police college is currently situated, once home to the now defunct Latvian Police Academy once stood.

The National Defence Academy is located nearby with staff from the two institutions to work together on the programme going forward.

The academy will prepare staff to work at law enforcement institutions, starting with operatives and ending with investigators and other specialists. Work will continue on conditions for enrolment. If a youngster wants to serve in services related to the interior sector, they will have to pass academic and physical tests, as well as meet specific health requirements, according to Eklons.

The parties to the agreement will share management of the facility. its curriculum and its resources.

Development of the facility is in response to a February 2020 report from the Ministry of the Interior that said the education system for officials of law enforcement need improvement.

It is believed that the situation in Ukraine has brought forward plans in Latvia to create the Internal Security Academy.
