Putin has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to achieve sustainable peace by sticking to the agreements reached between the two countries.

According to the news site ria.ru on Friday, October 28 Putin told the leaders of the two countries at a summit of leaders of the CSTO countries that both countries needed to honour the agreements.

He said: “Without a doubt, the only possible and realistic path to peace may be the path that is paved through strict compliance by the parties with all the provisions of the well-known joint statements of the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.”

This he said included the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the unblocking of transport communications and the solution of humanitarian problems.

He added that Russia is doing everything possible to achieve a comprehensive and comprehensive normalisation of relations between the two adversaries. He said he understands that the issues are complex: “Everyone understands, it is obvious to everyone.

“Azerbaijan and Armenia in the recent past, as well as Russia, we were all part of a single state. We have a huge number of ties with both Yerevan and Baku, and it is simply impossible not to take this into account.”

Tensions between the two have remained tense since the late 1980s, due in the main to the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh. In the autumn of 2020, another round of military confrontation ended with the conclusion of an agreement beneficial to Azerbaijan with Armenia returning the districts of Kelbajar, Lachin and Agdam districts.

Russian peacekeepers remain in the region but that has not stopped regular skirmishes, with both sides accusing the other of trying to disrupt the peace process.

It seems perverse that Putin has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to respect the terms of their peace agreement, whilst he wages war with his neighbour.
