Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is said to be setting up shop in Istanbul following the imposition of sanctions by Europe.

According to the Hurryiet Daily on Friday, October 28, Abramovich has been spending his days in the capital and surrounding coastal areas.

Local reports suggest he is looking for a new home having viewed a number of mansions in the region, with the newspaper’s magazine supplement Kelebek reporting earlier in the week: “There are some other countries that want to host Abramovich, however, Istanbul fascinated him.

“The billionaire, a guest in the city for now, has decided to become an Istanbulite.”

Abramovich already holds citizenships for Israel and Portugal as well as his home country of Russia. With a net worth of around $15 billion there are many countries keen to court the past owner of the Chelsea Football Club.

Kelebek report that he is also looking for a football team in Türkiye to buy although: “British dailies allege that Abramovich is looking for ways to own the Spanish team Valencia, but he is known to be in close contacts with some Turkish teams.”

Paparazzi following Abramovich say that he has a coffee every morning in the Rumelihisarı neighbourhood after going for a walk in the Bebek neighbourhood.”

He is said to have two more luxury yachts in Turkish waters bringing the total count to four, having recently acquired the 67-meter-long “Garcon” and 55-meter-long “Halo.”

The total price of the four yachts is estimated to be around $1.2 billion.

The news that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is to make Istanbul his home will raise many eyebrows, curious as to how the sanctioned billionaire is seemingly able to go about his normal business untouched.
