Pål Jonson, Sweden’s new Defence Minister, will visit his counterpart in Finland next week.


In a press release today, Friday, October 21, from the Ministry of Defence, it announced that Pål Jonson, Sweden’s new Defence Minister will make a working visit to Finland on Monday, October 24.

This will be Jonson’s first visit abroad in his new ministerial role. His visit will be hosted by Finland’s Defence Minister, Antti Kaikkonen.

During the visit, the two counterparts will discuss the countries’ bilateral defence cooperation, material cooperation, and trilateral cooperation with Norway. They are also expected to discuss the United States, the countries’ NATO integration, and Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Mr Jonson stepped into the role of Defence Minister last Tuesday 18. He has served as a Member of Parliament since 2016, and since 2019 as the representative responsible for defence affairs of the moderate coalition government.

Since 2020, Minister Jonson has also served as chairman of the defence committee. In his position, he has played a key role in Sweden’s NATO preparations. He has a doctorate in military science, as reported by hs.fi.
