A 34-year-old man has been killed after being struck by lightning in the Italian region of Campania.

Ugo Manganaro, a fisherman by profession, was found dead this morning following bad weather in the Italian peninsula. Reports suggest he was likely hit by lightning whilst walking near the sea during the storm. It is also suggested that perhaps an umbrella or some nearby light pole is what attracted the lightning, since his body did not have burn marks on it.

An alternative hypothesis being considered by investigators is that his death could be linked to the malfunction of an electrical substation located not far from where he was founded. It is thought that the bad weather could perhaps have caused a lethal discharge from the substation.

RaiNews has been reporting on how Italy was struck with bad weather yesterday, with heavy rain causing rivers and streams to overflow, leading to major flooding and damage to roads and infrastructure.
