Following the agreement reached by European Union lawmakers and member states last month to prohibit the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles and vans by 2035, new emission standards are being suggested for the future.

The new proposal for Euro 7 emission norms were announced by the EU on Thursday, November 10, according to a report published in the Associated Press.

The Euro 7 standards would apply to all vehicles marketed in the EU, including automobiles, vans, trucks, and buses, with the goal of cutting emissions from tailpipes, brakes, and tires. The automobile sector, according to the proposed norms, would require reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from cars and vans by 35% and by 56% from buses and trucks, compared to existing exhaust emission regulations.

The plan will be presented to the European Parliament and EU member countries, with the objective of the recommendations going into effect by July 2025 for cars and vans and July 2027 for heavy-duty vehicles.

According to the report, the European Union considers that setting new emission standards for the last generation of combustion engines is critical since vehicles that join the market before the 2035 deadline will stay in service for years. The report also added that transportation-related pollutants cause around 70,000 premature deaths in the EU each year.
