New sanction imposed after brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters by the Government 

A new round of sanctions against Iran were approved by the European Union´s foreign ministers. The sanctions come at a time when the Iranian regime has been accused of brutal suppression of peaceful protest. The EU block also targeted 29 along with three entities and imposed asset freezes and travel bans, according to a report in Euronews on Monday, November 14.

The sanction which are being imposed for the role of these individuals and entities in the death of Mahsa Amini and brutal action taken by the state authorities thereafter, the report states. The sanctioned individuals include four members of the squad that arrested Amini, provincial heads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Forces (LEF) and of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). Aside from this, Brigadier General Kiyumars Heidari, the Commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces has also been sanctioned.

The Iranian interior minister Ahmed Vahidi along with the head of the Iranian Cyber police Vahid Mohammad Naser Majid are also included in the list. The report also states that the state television news broadcaster Press TV has also been included for showing forced confessions of the detained protesters.

The 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who was also known as Jina Amini, died under strange circumstances in a hospital in Tehran, Iran on September 16, 2022. According to the report, she had fallen ill while she was in custody, after being detained for not wearing the hijab.
