Europol have announced a series of coordinated raids that took place between the 8-19 November across Europe and the UAE, targeting high-value targets in the drug industry, and leading to the arrests of 49 suspects.
A joint operation comprising police forces in six different nations, and supported by Europol, has aimed at bringing down both the command-and-control centre and the logistical drug trafficking infrastructure among one of Europe’s largest criminal organisations. The drug trafficking groups had come together to form what has been termed a ‘super cartel’, which collectively controlled around one third of the cocaine trade in Europe.
The arrests are the culmination of parallel investigations run in Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UAE, and supported by Europol. It is understood that the quantity of drugs under the command of this organisation is ‘massive’ and over 30 tonnes of drugs have been seized by authorities during the investigations.
