The President of Finland, Sauli Niinisto in a recent statement said that he believes that the Russian president Vladimir Putin, committed war crimes during the offensive in Ukraine.

¨I think that everything makes it seem that he is responsible for what happened, for criminal actions¨, Niinisto said in an interview, adding that the accusations will only be confirmed after the investigations are completed.

The Finnish President also stated his support for the efforts of French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to achieve a de-escalation through dialogue. He pointed to the choice of other nations, notably France and Germany, not to impose restrictions on Russian visitors, as Finland, Poland, and the Baltic states do, claiming that because they do not share a border, “it is simple to talk from afar.”

Niinisto has earlier this year had blamed Putin for Helsinki´s bid for NATO membership. During a news conference in May, the Finish President had said that Russia was at fault for Finland’s decision to apply for NATO’s membership.
