A recent report by Amnesty International claims that Russia committed war crimes by forcefully deporting and transferring Ukrainian civilians into Russian-occupied territory.
The report, which was published by the NGO on Thursday, November 10, states that the Russian military used such tactics frequently against Ukrainian civilians.
“This report is about family tragedies. It’s about families being split apart, about children being split from their parents, about fathers having to be separated,” said Agnes Callamard, the Secretary-General of Amnesty International in a quote to Euronews.
She further added that this report focused on the transfer and forced deportation of Ukrainian civilians into Russian-held territories. Adding, ¨ A situation that, in our opinion, amounts to war crimes and a probable crime against humanity”.
The report states that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine unleashed the gravest human rights and refugee crisis in Europe since World War Two. It also includes incidents documented by Amnesty International involving unlawful killing and injury of civilians, destruction of infrastructure, and blocking of desperately needed aid for civilians.
Aside from this, it talks about attacks on hospitals and schools, employing “surrender or starve” sieges on civilians, the use of banned weapons such as cluster munitions, and strikes on populated areas using inaccurate weapons may constitute war crimes.
