Iranian Government arrests 2nd Spanish national amid protests in the country

The Spanish foreign ministry issued a statement that a Spanish woman has been arrested in Iran.

According to a report published in the Associated Press on Thursday, November 10, the Spanish Embassy in Tehran has been pursuing the case and is in touch with the woman´s family in Spain.

The foreign ministry has declined to provide any further details about 24-year-old Ana Baneira.

This has been the second time that a Spanish National has been arrested in Iran this month. Earlier a Spanish man trekking from Madrid to Doha to watch the FIFA World Cup is believed to have been also arrested earlier. The report stated that the Spanish diplomats are in touch with the Iranian authorities about the 41-year-old trekker Santiago Sanchez.

According to report, last week another woman from Italy was detained, but was eventually freed by the Iranian authorities. The report also states that according to Italian news, Alissia Piperno has previously made a social media post in solidarity of the demonstrations over the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, 22, who was imprisoned by morality police for allegedly breaching the country’s severe dress code for women.

According to Human Rights Activists in Iran, the report states, at least 328 people have been killed and over 14,825 have been arrested ever since the protests.
