A video of an Italian train conductor giving a speech over the intercom on his last ever journey before retiring has gone viral, leading viewers to reflect on the service of transport workers.

Alfredo Venditti has worked for the Campania public transport company for 34 years. This week he embarked on his final journey as a conductor, and didn’t wish to let the moment pass without reflecting on his career on the trains. Speaking through the intercom, Vendetti started by wishing the passengers good morning, before informing them that “I’m retiring in four stops”.

He went on to say “I have been honoured to serve the people and I have always tried to give my best. Now I want to wish you that your wishes come true and your worries disappear. I greet you and wish you a good life”.

Fortunately, a passenger managed to film Vendetti’s speech, during which passengers applauded throughout his message. In a further video, posted on Facebook by the President of the EAV transport company, Umberto de Gregorio, an emotional Vendetti walks down the carriage, surrounded by the applause of the passengers.

RaiNews have reported how Facebook users have been quick to share and comment on the video. Among those adding their thoughts was Vendetti’s daughter, who said that “work is emotional as well as a living and he taught us that. He taught us that work is dignity, independence, that one can be fair and consistent doing it”.
