Three migrants travelled from Nigeria on the rudder of an oil tanker

Three African migrants were transferred to a hospital to get medical attention after they travelled on a ships rudder to reach the Canary islands in Spain.

According to a report by Euronews on Tuesday, November 29, the authorities said the migrants left from Lagos in Nigeria on Novemner 17. They eventually reached Las Palmas on Monday, the report said.

“The men appeared to have symptoms of dehydration and hypothermia and were transferred to hospital for medical attention”, said Salvamento Marítimo, Spain’s maritime rescue service.

Las Palmas, the report adds, has historically been a route for African migrants trying to reach European borders. As the islands are only 100 kilometers from Morocco, it is the closest point from Africa to enter EU borders.

According to recent official data by the Spain government, migration by sea to this region has increased by over 51%, compared to 2021, the report said. The report also states that this is not the first time that migrants have been found on the rudders of commercial ships

In 2021, a 14 year old boy also made the same journey after he survived on the ship’s rudder for over two weeks. Another case from October 2020, the report states, involved four other people who were travelling on the rudder of an oil tanker for over 10 days.
