Earns a record $4.7 Million prize money for being unbeaten in the tournament, as he matches Federer’s six ATP wins
Serbian Tennis champion Novak Djokovic on Sunday, November 20, beat his Norwegian opponent Casper Ruud to win the ATP finals in Turin, Italy. Djokovic won his 6th ATP title after his last victory in 2015 after beating his opponent 7-5 6-3, according to a report by Associated Press.
“Seven years has been a long time,” said, Djokovic, according to a statement from the report. He added, “At the same time, the fact that I waited seven years makes this victory even sweeter and even bigger”.
Djokovic also won a record $4.7 Million prize money, which is highest ever amount, won by a tennis player, the report adds. He won this prize for being unbeaten throughout the tournament.
“I missed a couple of forehands in the last game when I was serving for it. I had nerves, but I am really grateful to be able to serve the match out. I had a big ace to close out.” said Djokovic,
The 6th ATP title win puts the Serbian tennis player at par with the previous record holder Roger Federer. Djokovic also became the oldest champion to win the ATP finals. This victory for him comes in a year after he missed two tournaments, as he refused to get vaccinated for COVID 19.
