Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says Russia does not have a veto on countries joining as NATO renews the promise of membership to Ukraine
NATO has again announced its promise to one day include Ukraine in the alliance. According to a report by Associated Press on Tuesday, November 29, the alliance has also announced that they will sending more air to help Ukrainian forces fight the war against Russia.
The report said, NATO foreign leaders met with Antony Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State, to discuss the support for Ukraine amid attacks on energy infrastructure in the country by Russia. The leaders in a statement announced, “Russia cannot stop the alliance’s expansion”, the report added.
While talking about Ukraine, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary-General said, “NATO’s door is open”, during a meeting in the Romanian capital Bucharest.
He said that after Montenegro and North Macedonia joined, Russian President Vladimir Putin will make Finland and Sweden also join NATO”, the report said. Stoltenberg further said, “Russia does not have a veto on countries joining”, adding “We stand by that, too, on membership for Ukraine.”
According to the report, the NATO leaders in 2008 had announced that Ukraine and Georgia will one day be a part of the alliance. This announcement was made during another meeting also held in Bucharest. The report also adds, according to some officials and analysts, the declaration made then by the Former U.S. President George W. Bush, was partly responsible for Russian attack on Ukraine.
