European Commission’s Foreign Aid Department hosted a party in the metaverse to try and raise awareness among younger audiences failed to attract people

An online party hosted by the European Commission’s Foreign Aid Department in the Metaverse, resulted in just six people making a digital appearance at the event. According to a report by Euronews on Monday, November 5, the commission spent over €387,000 on the online venue.

The event was designed to promote the EU’s Global Gateway initiative, which hopes to see a €300 billion investment in building new infrastructure across a variety of countries.  The report said, the concept behind the event was to educate young people about the EU bloc and to take them to a space in order to make them understand more about what the EU does.

The report said, the concept behind the event was simple enough: to educate young people about the bloc and draw them into a space where they could learn more about what the EU does.

According to a statement by the Commission in the article, “The target audience is 18–35-year-olds who identify as neutral about the EU and are not generally engaged in political issues”.

The event’s spokesperson meanwhile said, way more than 6 people were connected to the event. “The ‘gala’ was an online event, which took place on November 29 from 9 to 10 pm”, said the spokesperson, adding, “Our statistics show 300 people connected during the gala, and that over 5,000 people on that day”.
