The climate activist group Last Generation has announced that two of their members used a hand saw to cut the top of the iconic Christmas tree at the Brandenburg Gate, in Berlin. According to a report in the Associated Press, the incident took place on Wednesday, December 21, after activists used a hydraulic lift to reach the top of the tree.

Last generations said in a statement that their members cut two meters off the top of the 15-meters tree. They also hung a banner stating “This is only the tip of the Christmas tree”.

The statement by the group also said the action was aimed to highlight that “Germany is so far only seeing the tip of the climate catastrophe happening around the world”. They called on the government of German Chanceller Olaf Scholz to do more in order to tackle global warming, the report said.

Meanwhile, the report also said, the German police have confirmed the incident but didn´t issue a response immediately.

In recent months, the group has attracted attention and controversy due to their actions, such as blocking busy major roads and throwing food at well-known artworks.
