One killed after rogue wave hits cruise ship near Argentina

Four others were injured onboard the Norwegian flagged cruise ship Viking Polaris bound for Antarctica  

An American woman on board a Norwegian flagged cruise ship died during a storm in the South Atlantic Ocean. According to a report by the BBC on Sunday, December 4, the ship known as the Viking Polaris was struck by rogue waves during a storm, as it sailed towards Ushuaia, Argentina.  

A report from local Argentinian media stated, the victim died after she was struck by shattered glass. Her nationality was revealed by Argentine news agency Telam. A statement by the agency said, “the dead passenger was an American woman who “received blows from a glass surface that collapsed in the middle of the storm”.   

Meanwhile, Viking has stated that investigations regarding the incident are underway. A statement issued by the cruise ship company offered condolences and said, “Our focus remains on the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew, and we are working directly with them to arrange return travel”. The report added, the name or the nationality was not revealed by the company.  

The ship meanwhile has sustained limited damage, but the company, the report added, has decided to cancel its scheduled voyage to Antarctica.
