Der Spiegel – Prosecutors in the German city of Dresden have now taken over the investigation into a murder and hostage-taking incident that took place on Saturday 10 December.

Police have been dealing with three crime scenes after a 40-year-old man killed his 62-year-old mother in the Prohlis district of Dresden. He then attempted to break into the Radio Dresden headquarters, before later taking two people hostage in a shopping centre in the city. One of those who was held hostage was the nine-year-old child of one of the assailant’s friends, and the other a 38-year-old employee in an office in the Altmarkt-Galerie shopping centre.

According to police reports, once holed up in the shopping centre office with the hostages, the attacker dialled 911, after which the authorities maintained constant contact with him. Concerns about the safety of the hostages were increased after emergency services heard gunshots coming from the office, with security officials forcing entry into the building. As a result, the assailant was killed during the confrontation, but fortunately the two hostages escaped unharmed.

Police have said that further information is currently not available and that an investigation into the facts is now underway but will take time to complete.
