People rushed to take refuge in bomb shelters on Thursday, December 29 after Russia launched strikes targeting the capital Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine  

One of Moscow´s largest assaults on Ukraine took place on Thursday, after Russia fired multiple missiles targeting various cities across the country.

According to a report in Reuters, cities including the capital Kyiv, Lviv in the west, and Odesa in the south, were amongst several others that were attacked.  

Air sirens were activated across the country for over five hours, as Ukrainian officials said they shot down 54 out of the total 69 missiles launched by Russian forces.  

A statement tweeted by Oleksii Reznikov, Ukraine’s defense minister said, “The downing of 54 missiles saved the lives of dozens of people & protected key parts of our economic infrastructure”.  

Ukraine officials were earlier quoted saying that over 120 missiles were fired during the assault, as per the report.  

Meanwhile, Ukraine´s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called the recent attack by Russia as “senseless barbarism”. His statement posted on Twitter added, “These are the only words that come to mind seeing Russia launch another missile barrage at peaceful Ukrainian cities ahead of New Year”.
