A cartel kingpin escapes along with two dozen prisoners after the attack in a Mexican prison on the border town of Juarez 

Mexican authorities have said that 19 people have died after an attack on the prison in the border town of Juarez.  

According to a report in Reuters on Monday, January 2, a cartel kingpin escaped along with 20 other prisoners.  

The incident took place after a heavily armed group who were travelling in armoured vehicles launched an attack. They simultaneous targeted the prison as well as the Municiple police station, as per the Mexican defence ministry.  

Authorities said the attack took place on Sunday morning as the initial death toll was believed to be atleast 14. The defence ministry later revealed that the toll had risen to 19 with 10 guards dead along with seven prisoners and two of the attackers. 

The attack resulted in 25 inmates escaping. This included Ernesto Alfredo Pinon de la Cruz, also known as “El Neto”. The report said, “Pinon is a top gunman for the Juarez-based Los Mexicles cartel”.  

The incident on Sunday resulted in one of the greatest prison assault fatalities in Mexico since recent years.
