Police in Italy say 56 people have been arrested throughout the country with links to the notorious ‘Ndrangheta crime syndicate

Authorities in Italy have arrested 56 people and seized assets estimated to be worth €250 million in connection to the ‘Ndrangheta crime syndicate.

According to a report in Euronews on Thursday, January 26, the Italian police has said that the suspects will now face charges including “extortion, kidnapping, arms trafficking, corruption and fraud, among others”.

As per a statement cited in the report by Francesco Messina, the central director, national police’s anti-crime unit “judicial police’s powerful operation… has allowed us to dismantle a fierce mafia coterie”.

Messina also said, “the huge sum of assets seized confirms the economic power of the ‘Ndrangheta clan, that’s finally been hit”.

This major bust during a police operation comes only weeks after Sicilian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro was arrested at a clinic in Palermo.

The ‘Ndrangheta is a prominent Italian Mafia-type organized crime syndicate based in the peninsular and mountainous region of Calabria and dating back to the late 18th century. It is considered one of the most powerful organized crime groups in the world.

Authorities state that the ‘Ndrangheta clan is deeply involved in the trafficking of drugs across Europe, adding that they also have very strong connections with other cartels in South America.
