UN says most of the earth´s atmospheric layer protecting us from ultraviolent rays could be fully healed by 2040

The Earth´s ozone layer is on course to be fully healed within a decade according to a report by the United Nations.

The hole in the ozone layers, which was once considered to be one of greatest disasters to the environment, is on its way to being almost completely healed in most parts around the world by 2040, said a report cited in the Guardian on Monday, January 9.

The report said that the poles will take longer to heal. As per the predictions by experts, the ozone over the Arctic is expected to heal by 2045, while in the Arctic it will take two more decades, until 2066.

“Ozone action sets a precedent for climate action,” said Petteri Taalas, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization, as per a quote cited in the report.

Taalas added, “Our success in phasing out ozone-eating chemicals shows us what can and must be done as a matter of urgency to transition away from fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gases and so limit temperature increase.”

Another statement cited in the report by David Fahey, a scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who is a lead author of the new assessment said, “the Montreal agreement should be considered the most successful environmental treaty in history and offers encouragement that countries of the world can come together and decide an outcome and act on it”.

The 1989 Montreal protocol was an international agreement that banned the use of ozone-depleting chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that were used as refrigerants and solvents.
