Police in Italy have arrested the country´s most wanted mafia boss Matteo Massina Denaro in Palermo, the capital of Sicily.

According to the BBC on Monday, January 16, Messina Denaro was arrested while receiving treatment for cancer at a clinic.

After receiving information about his location, over 100 officials of the armed forces arrested him.

Messina Denaro is allegedly the boss of the Cosa Nostra Mafia, and he had been reported to be on the run for over 30 years.

In 2002, he had been convicted for several murders during a trial in absentia held in Italy.

He was accused of several murders including the killing of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992.

Aside from that, he was also accused of deadly bombings that took place in Milan, Florence and Rome.

Messina Denaro was also accused of murdering the 11-year-old son of a mafia turned state witness, who had been kidnapped and tortured.

As per the report, he was also responsible for “racketeering, illegal waste dumping, money-laundering and drug-trafficking for the powerful Cosa Nostra organized crime syndicate”.

Officials also said that even though he had been on the run since 1993, he was involved with issuing orders to his subordinates while hiding in several unknown locations.
