Germany has announced that they will be pledging an estimated €200 million to help Brazil defend the Amazon rain forest, after it has suffered from major devastation during the rule of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

According to a report by Reuters on Monday, January 30, the amount which is partly a credit as well as donations was announced during the a trip by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Brazil.

Scholz is the first among western leaders who has visited the country since President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been sworn in.

As per official reports, the total sum includes donations estimated at €35 million, which will be sent to the Amazon Fund.

This fund is a billion dollar initiate that has been funded by both Germany and Norway, aimed to protect the Amazon rain forest and to stop deforestation in the region.

The fund had been frozen in 2019, when its governing board and action plans were abolished by Bolsonaro. It was again reactivated by Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina, after she took office with an aim to stop deforestation in the rainforest.
