A powerful assault lead by PMC Wagner on Soledar in eastern Ukraine, is being described as a difficult situation by Ukraine military 

Officials in Ukraine have said Russia has intensified its assault in the salt mining town of Soledar as well as across the country´s eastern front.  

According to a report in Reuters on Monday, January 9, Ukranian military is fighting waves of Wagner contract militia.  

A statement by Hanna Malyar, Ukrainian deputy defence minister, cited in the report said, “Ukrainian forces repelled an earlier attempt to take the town but a large number of Wagner units quickly returned, deploying fresh tactics and more soldiers under heavy artillery cover”.  

She said, “The enemy literally step over the corpses of their own soldiers, using massed artillery, MLRS systems and mortars”, adding, “the attackers were drawn from Wagner’s best reserves”.  

Soledar is a part of the Donbas region. It is also located close to Bakhmut, where heavy losses have been reported from both sides.  

Bakhmut has witness some of the most intense trench warfare since the Ukraine war began in February.
