Investigations have been started by UK counterterrorism police after border officers seize cargo
Police in the UK have seized cargo reported to be contaminated with uranium.
According to a report in the Associated Press on Wednesday, January 11, the discovery was made after border officers seized the cargo.
A statement by the Metropolitan police said that “a very small amount of contaminated material was identified after routine screening within a package incoming to the U.K”.
Meanwhile an investigation has been started by the counterterrorism police, who stated that no arrests have been made so far.
The shipment contaminated with uranium contained scrap metal and originated in Pakistan. It reached London after a flight from Oman, as per the report.
“The amount of contaminated material was “extremely small and has been assessed by experts as posing no threat to the public”, said, Richard Smith, Police Commander.
“Does not appear to be linked to any direct threat, but the investigation continues”.
“We will of course, follow every avenue to see what the background to this was and satisfy ourselves that there’s no further threat”, he added.
