Parliament in Finland votes to pass a law aimed to make changing legal gender for trans people easier

Finland has passed a law which would make it much easier for trans people to change their legal gender.

According to a report in Euronews on Thursday, February 2, Finland´s prime minister Sanna Marin said that introducing the law was a priority of her government, which was passed on Wednesday.

The law was passed by a majority of 113 votes in favour and 69 against.

It was also opposed by the Christian Democrats from the far right.

As per the report, ‘the new laws mean transgender people aged 18 and older can legally change their gender by a process of self-declaration, and no longer have to go through an onerous medical and psychiatric approval process first’.

Through the amendments made to the legislation, a provision requiring transgender people to provide a medical certificate that would prove if they were infertile or sterile for gender change has also been abolished.

Amendments also abolish a provision that required transgender people to provide a medical certificate proving they were infertile or sterilised before the government would recognise their gender identity.
