The government of Spain passes law to allow paid menstrual leave to women from work

The Parliament in Spain on Thursday, February 16 has passed a bill that will allow women to take paid menstrual leave from work.

The law was approved as a part of a bigger package being introduced in the country based on sexual and reproducing rights.

Through this law, women will have the right to take a “three-day menstrual leave of absence – with the possibility of extending it to five days – for those with disabling periods, which can cause severe cramps, nausea, dizziness and even vomiting”, as per Euronews.

In order to take the leave, a note from the doctor will be required and the social security will take care of the bill.

The government also passed other laws that will now allow anyone over 16 to get an abortion as well as the possibility to change their legal gender on their identification cards.

“A historic day of progress in feminist rights”, said Spain’s equality minister Irene Montero, adding, “There will be resistance to its application, just as there has been and there will be resistance to the application of all feminist laws”.

She also said that “we have to work to guarantee that when this law enters into force, it will be enforced”.

Menstrual leaves are offered only in a few countries across the world including Zambia, South Korea, Japan and Indonesia.
