More than 700 migrants have been rescued by the Italian coast guard during two separate operations.

According to Reuters on Thursday, March 23, the operations took place on the southern coastline of the country as migrants were attempting to cross from Tunisia.

Atleast five people have been reported dead and another 33 were missing after the incident, the authorities said.

As per a statement by coast guards, “some 295 people were rescued from a fishing boat intercepted 167 km from the eastern coast of the Calabria region, while about 450 were rescued from another fishing vessel 185 km east of Syracuse in southern Sicily”.

The statement added, “The second vessel was in precarious state of seaworthiness, and three cargo ships and a patrol boat from EU border agency Frontex helped with the rescue”.
