Jingping is visiting Russia in a bit to deepen economic ties and to play a role as a potential peace maker in Ukraine

President Xi Jingping has arrived in Moscow to meet his Russian counterpart President Vladimir Putin on Monday, March 20.

According to Reuters, his visit to the country has been planned with an aim to deepen economic ties between the two countries and to play a key role as a peace maker in Ukraine.

The top brass of the Russian military greeted him at the Vnukovo airport in Moscow where Dmitri Chernyshenko Russia’s deputy prime minister for tourism, sport, culture and communications was also present.

“I am very glad, at the invitation of President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, to come back to the land of our close neighbour on a state visit,” Xi said upon arrival, according to Russia’s state-run Tass news agency.

He added, “I am confident the visit will be fruitful and give new momentum to the healthy and stable development of Chinese-Russian relations.”

Xi also stated that both Russia and China were “ready to resolutely defend the UN-centric international system, stand guard over the world order based on international law”.

Meanwhile, Putin in a statement said that “We have thoroughly studied your proposals on regulating the acute crisis in Ukraine. Of course, we will have an opportunity to discuss them”, as he referred to the peace plan proposed by China.

He added, “We are always open to negotiations”.
