International Criminal Court to seek arrests of Russian officials after launching war crimes cases against them

Officials from Russia could face arrests as the International Criminal Court intends to launch war crimes cases against them

According to Reuters on Monday, March 13, the cases could be launched for “forcibly deporting children from Ukraine and targeting civilian infrastructure”.

This would be the first international war crimes case since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 24, 2022.

A source cited by the report said, “the arrest warrants could include the crime of genocide and were expected to arrive in the short term if the court prosecutor’s request was approved by a pre-trial judge at the Hague-based court”.

War crimes cases against Russia will further isolate the country and would also make the accused to travel abroad.

Meanwhile, Konstantin Kosachyov, deputy speaker of Russia’s upper house of parliament, said that “the ICC had no jurisdiction over the country since Moscow withdrew its backing in 2016”.

He also stated that “The ICC is an instrument of neo-colonialism in the hands of the West”.

This comes after Ukrainian government has reported that thousands of children are being from the country are being “adopted into Russian families, housed in Russian camps and orphanages, given Russian passports and brought up to reject Ukrainian nationality”.
