The start of an all-electric Formula E race at Berlin was delayed after climate change activists jumped the fence and sat in from of the cars on the track.

A Formula E race at Berlin was disrupted after climate activists jumped the fence and sat in front of the cars on Sunday, April 23.

The race was being held at the Tempelhof airport circuit, when the activists rushed towards the track, just as it started.

A video of the incident was also posted on Twitter by Letzte Generation (Last Generation), as the woman wearing a white T-shirt scaled the fence, before running to sit on the track.

The group posted a statement with the video on Twitter that said, “It’s time to slow down. Because we’re on the highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator”.

Meanwhile, a statement by a Formula E spokesperson cited by Reuters said, “Security services quickly and safely contained the disruption”.

It added, “The event was able to proceed as planned”.

Formula E takes pride in being the first sport in the world which has been certified as net zero carbon, since the time it was started.

It is also the “only FIA-sanctioned zero-emission all-electric world championship”.

Automotive manufacturers including Porsche, DS, Nio, Maserati, Jaguar, Nissan, McLaren and Mahindra are among the teams the compete in this series.
