Scholz warns Germans to ‘prepare for an escalation’ from Russia in Ukraine war

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that Germans must be “prepared for an escalation” in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Scholz was speaking at a conference in Berlin hosted by the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. He told the audience that an escalation in Russia’s military efforts was possible due to the “evolution of the war and Russia’s visible and growing failures”’. The Chancellor explained that this escalation may come in the form of the destruction of infrastructure.

The comments followed an appeal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for Ukrainians to save energy where possible, in face of Russia’s attacks on energy infrastructure which have halved the country’s energy capacity. Authorities have warned that it is possible that millions of Ukrainians, including in the capital Kyiv, could face power outages until at least the end of March due to the rocket attacks.

During Scholz’s appearance, he also spoke of his recent trip to China. He stated that it had been worthwhile as it had allowed both countries to share their common position against the use of nuclear weapons.
