Greek authorities say rescue effort in the Mediterranean to save the refugees was the largest in recent history
The Greek authorities have rescued a broken-down fishing vessel with hundreds of migrants crammed in it. According to a report by the Associated Press, Greek authorities on Tuesday, November 22, said the ship has been drifting south of the Greek island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.
A tweet by Notis Mitarachi; Greek Migration Minister stated, the coast guard had rescued over 500 people, adding that immediate relief is being provided for the rescued passengers.
Mitarachi also said, he will be asking the European Commission to help in relocating the migrants to other EU nations, as part of EU´s solidarity with Greece, the report said.
After being rescued, the boat was towed to the port of Palaiochora in Crete. The report also states that so far there are no where abouts of where the boat had set sail from and what its destination was.
Meanwhile Giannis Plakiotakis, Greek shipping Minister said, this rescue effort was the largest rescue effort in the Mediterranean since recent years. “I assure that Greece will continue to effectively protect our maritime borders, which are also Europe’s maritime borders, saving the lives of our fellow human beings and dismantling ruthless smugglers’ networks”, said Plakiotakis, the report adds.
