TERROR ATTACK: Resort town of Cambrils (Tarragona) in northern Spain

POLICE in Spain have shot and killed five suspected terrorists in a shoot-out in the resort town of Cambrils (Tarragona) this morning after a vehicle rammed into pedestrians. Police say the attackers were wearing fake explosive bomb vests.

Six civilians and one police officer were injured, two seriously, when an Audi A3 ran over them.

The attack is being linked with the Barcelona attack 62 miles (100 kilometres) away to the north.

It came just hours after the Las Ramblas attack in which thirteen people died and more than 100 were injured.

Catalonia’s interior minister, Joaquin Forn, has told local radio that the vehicle attacks on Las Ramblas and in Cambrils “follow the same trail”.

More details have emerged overnight about the attack on Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

At least 18 different nationalities were among the victims According to the latest statement from Spain’s civil protection agency nationals from France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Argentina, Venezuela, Belgium, Australia, Hungary, Peru, Romania, Ireland, Greece, Cuba, Macedonia, China, Italy and Algeria are among those affected.

A manhunt is still underway for the driver of the van, Reuters news agency has reported. The two men who have been arrested are not believed to be the driver. One of those arrested is Moroccan, the other is from the Spanish enclave of Melilla, north Africa, police said.

And in a further development authorities report that there is a link to an incident where one person was killed in an explosion on Wednesday night in Alcanar and one person was seriously injured and eight others hurt in a second explosion at a property on Thursday afternoon.
