THE Guardia Civil have recovered a young sub-Saharan man’s body in the Mediterranean Sea near to where a vessel carrying 47 migrants sank last weekend.
Only four men were saved after the migrant-carrying craft – which embarked from Bouyafar in Morocco last Saturday – sank, according to sources.
The coastguard is losing hope of finding any more of the passengers alive.
And medics continue to treat the men – who were suffering from severe hypothermia when rescued on Saturday night – at Almeria’s Torrecardenas Hospital.
A merchant vessel’s crew spotted a body reportedly of a man aged between 20 and 25 years-old, several kilometres south of Cabo de Gata just before 7pm on Sunday.
They alerted Guardia Civil headquarters who sent out a patrol.
Agents located the body and took it to Almeria’s fishing port, from where Judicial Police took charge of the case and transported the corpse to the Legal Medicinal Institute for autopsy.
The coastguard has rescued 1,290 people crossing the Mediterranean in search of improved living conditions since last Friday.
