A TEAM of archaeologists have begun a series of digs at the Alcazaba site to study the effects of humidity on renovations.
The group of excavators have begun unearthing the area around the fortress’ south wall. They are investigating the causes of concrete placed there in the 1980’s breaking off from the wall, according to the Junta de Andalucia.
Miguel Angel Vazquez, the Junta’s Culture spokesperson, said the concrete had shown “significant” damage.
“The concrete has deteriorated which has exposed the hidden medieval walls in some areas. There are large areas of the outer wall which show damage,” he said.
The Junta de Andalucia has backed the digs with more than €25,124 in funds. The archaeologists will be able to study the exposed medieval walls as part of the excavation.
