We must keep reforming and keep pushing for positive change, says Metsola

European leaders marked the 70th anniversary of the EU Parliament during a ceremony held on Tuesday, November 22. According to a report by Euronews, decades after its initial creation, leaders in Strasburg marked the 70th anniversary, since the founding of the parliament.

The anniversary event was led by Roberta Metsola, EU Parliament President, as she said, “The European Parliament may not be perfect but should keep pushing to reform and strengthen its democracy while celebrating its diversity”, the report states. She said, “I am proud of our achievements as our way of being a beacon for the defence of democracy and of the way that we have never been indifferent”.

Metsola further added, “Our process is sometimes frustrating, progress is not always fast enough or deep enough or easy enough. We must keep reforming. We must keep pushing for positive change, day in and day out”.

The European Parliament got its name in 1962, the report said. It was first made up of 78 parliamentarians who were appointed from national parliaments of Germany, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Netherlands and Italy. The first direct elections were held in 1979.

The report also adds, the original date of the anniversary was September 10. Following that, several events have been organized to commemorate the anniversary.
