Europe need to be more technological self-reliance: Finland’s PM

PM Sanna Marin wants the EU to reduce its dependency on China for technology and the raw material required to manufacture

Finland´s Prime Minster on Thursday, November 17, announced that Europe should be wary of its dependency on China. According to a report on Euronews, Marin said, Europe is currently too dependent on China for Technologies. She was speaking at an annual start up event called Slush, held in Helsinki.  

“We have to make sure that we have the capabilities and the knowledge to build these technologies and not be dependent on China and other authoritarian countries that have a different logic than democratic countries have,” said, Marin, in a statement according to the report.  

She stated that Europe requires to immediately increase its investment in the development of new fields in technology. This includes artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Marin further added, “I really worry about this technology part because I fear we are making the same mistakes with technology and digital solutions and also raw materials we need to build these technologies”. 

Marin also stated that mistakes committed by the EU in the energy industry due to its reliance on Russian energy, as well as in the medical field during the COVID epidemic, should not be repeated in the technology sector.
