Russian news outlet Verstka has stated that a battalion of Russian conscripts has been destroyed near the village of Makiyivka, Svatove district, Luhansk Oblast. It is believed that potentially over 500 servicemen were killed in a Ukrainian offensive.

Information about the attack has originated both from survivors and the relatives of the conscripts involved. One of the survivors, Aleksey Agafonov, spoke to Verstka about the losses among the conscripts as a result of the attack.

Agafonov, the commander of the battalion of conscripts, said that the soldiers had been promised that they were being brought to Svatove to join the “territorial defence” 15 kilometres from the front line. However, on 2 November the entire battalion was taken to the contact line and told they must entrench and hold the line of defence.

The conscripts are believed to hail from the Voronezh Oblast region of Russia. Relatives of these soldiers have spoken to the media to confirm the reports of hundreds of soldiers killed.

Anna, the wife of a draftee, said that the surviving conscripts are now requesting to be sent home, saying that “They are being bombed there. No officers, no one is there.” The claim that the army leadership had abandoned the soldiers was made by numerous relatives.
